Tips for Saving Money on Your Wedding Cake
Wedding cakes can make a huge impression on your guests when they first walk into your reception hall. In this post I discuss how to save money on your wedding cake without having to give up the statement it sends your guests.
The first thing to think of when you are trying to save money on your cake is sheer size. By cutting back on the tiers of your wedding cake and using a sheet cake to serve the majority of your guests you will save a large amount of money. This doesn’t mean you can’t still have a 3 or 4 tiered cake, but you can use smaller diameter cakes that make up the tiers. This is a really good option if you are planning on a larger wedding because it can be extremely expensive to serve a couple hundred guests just with a tiered cake. Another option if you are having a more causal wedding is to only use a sheet cake.
Even if you decide to have a tiered cake there are other options to help you save money on it. The first is to use butter cream frosting instead of fondant. Second, you can minimize the decorations put on the cake by your baker. Flowers and other decorations are very time consuming which can increase the price of the cake. A great alternative is to talk to your florist and use real flowers on the cake or you can always purchase fake flowers that your baker can use to decorate the cake instead. Aside from flowers there are other items that you can use to decorate your cake that can help you save money and still have your cake look wonderful. If you can find ribbon that matches the colors chosen for your wedding your baker can wrap it around the bases of each of your tiers. Also, you if you are using fondant frosting your baker can decorate it directly, but using dots or making creases in the fondant to make a design.
